First life, then space, then buildings
This manual promotes the core values which STIPO considers essential when working from the human dimension, based on the work of Jan Gehl amongst others. These are based on research of neighbourhoods that have proven to be successful over decades and centuries. They tell us what a good, inclusive, and sustainable living environment requires and the work that goes into it. STIPO discusses how for areas to continue to function sustainably, at the human scale and with good social quality where users feel at home, the following are crucial: mixed use; greenery; biodiversity, and the quality of public space. The manual also promotes the need to think about life first when working on area development or redevelopment. This should then be translated into public space and only then will we shape the building blocks and buildings. The manual breaks down the theory behind this approach, outlining practical steps through the use of best practice case studies.
