Bicycle sharing systems and cycling promotion – Factsheet
This fact sheet presents a brief overview of the outcomes of the PhD research by Suzanne Maas at the University of Malta, focused on the usage of Bicycle Sharing Systems (BSS) in Southern European island cities. In the research, the role of BSS in promoting cycling as a mode of transport was analysed, based on case study research in Limassol (Cyprus), Malta and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain), in order to formulate recommendations for accelerating a modal shift from private car use towards sustainable and shared mobility – with a focus on cycling.
