Jane Jacobs: The Death And Life Of Great American Cities

Since its publication in 1961, this book is a must read in urban planning fields. Jane Jacobs writes about what makes streets successful; what makes a neighbourhood; its role in the city and also what constitutes to building a sense of community. The book is a critique of modernist urban planning. Instead Jacobs advocates for dense mixed-use development and walkable streets, stressing the importance of the “eyes on the street” concept and the importance of quality pavements together with their adjacent buildings and uses, for ensuring a sense of vibrancy and cities which feel secure and socially integrated.
